Atrailer for new film The Circle, starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, was released on Tuesday night.
The film is set in a slick, social media-dominated future in which everyone is connected, and nothing is private. Seem familiar?
Tom Hanks plays a Mark Zuckerberg character, the villain of the story, based on the 2013 Dave Eggers novel of the same name.
In the trailer, Emma Watson plays Mae Holland, a young woman who goes to work for a big technology company, The Circle.
Hanks plays the CEO and founder of the company, promising a future of total transparency.
However, inevitably, the technology is not as benign as it first seems, and chaos ensues.
In an age where the most powerful technology companies in the world are powered by our personal data, and we have never had less privacy, The Circle looks as if it could draw a lot of interest.
Many have seen parallels with Google and Facebook, even claiming it will cause the companies a “PR headache”.
Many have said the trailer reminds them of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian series Black Mirror, which had a successful Netflix debut this year.
The company in the film gives users one internet identity and encourages full disclosure.
They market SeeChange cameras, which record the user’s whole life.
Emma Watson’s character uses one of these, and becomes famous as a result.
The trailer also shows a short scene with John Boyega, who shows Emma Watson’s character a program that “has the power to change everything”.
Director James Ponsoldt told USA Today: “She becomes a pseudo-celebrity with her superpower, that she’s natural, relatable and willing to speak freely about everything in her life.
“But it gets to the point where it’s almost a religion and then a glass prison of celebrity.”
The film, out in the US on April 28, 2017, also features Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt and Boyhood’s Ellar Coltrane.
